Roger Davis really doesn't give a crap about the first sixteen years of his life, or at least pretends not to. Single mother, a lot of moving around... In any case, he considers his life to have really started when he moved to Scarsdale and met a scrawny Jewish kid with glasses and a camera - Mark Cohen. The two of them hit it off immediately - Roger was sort of an outcast by virtue of being the new kid and not exactly friendly to most people anyway, and Mark was... Mark. When they graduated high school, Mark went off to college at Brown, and Roger went off to New York to become a rock star. Mark dropped out of Brown within two months and came to live with Roger in New York.

A few years later found them living in a loft on the corner of 11th Street and Avenue B with four other roommates - Benny, Collins, Maureen, and Roger's girlfriend April. Roger had a band - the Well Hungarians (of which April was the single female member) - and was doing fairly well in the club scene. At the same time, he and April and the rest of the band were getting into drugs, heroin mostly. Mark was the first of their roommates to find out about this and, understandably, freaked out. Not that it had much effect beyond a few arguments (a couple escalating into actual fights) between Mark and Roger, but from that point on Mark tended to keep an eye on Roger, try to keep him out of trouble as much as he could.

Slowly, things at the loft kind of fell apart. Benny married Alison Grey of the Westport Greys and moved out, and soon after Collins got a job teaching at MIT and left as well. Maureen dated Mark for a while, and then decided she was a lesbian (bullshit, in Roger's opinion, not that he'd ever tell Mark that) and dumped him for a lawyer named Joanne. And Mark, Roger and April stayed in the loft and went about their lives pretty much as they had been, Mark trying to make his films and pretending he didn't notice when his friends got high, Roger and April performing with the band and growing in popularity and generally doing Mark the favor of only getting high when he wasn't around.

Things fell apart even more about a year ago. Mark got in a car wreck and died the night after the accident. The loss of his best friend plunged Roger even deeper into drugs, half pulling April with him. He's still the vibrant rock star as far as anyone can see, but he's lost the person who mattered most to him - even more than April - and since then has shied away from connection with anyone, even pulled away from April to a degree. He's been hardened and scarred more than he ever was before, and it shows in cynicism and antagonism and barbed words, even towards those he considers his friends.

Since coming into the Bar, Roger is kind of stuck there, as his door has disappeared. He is not particularly bothered by not being able to return home, given that when he left, April was trying to seriously injure him. After several run-ins with Ace, the Greek god of healing, Ace made Roger immune to heroin - something that pissed Roger off quite a bit and forced him into a rather nasty withdrawal. He's clean now, though certainly not by choice.
